UpGear Finance

Designing a solution around adding a new payment method (leasing high tech high cost products) to existing reseller websites.

The Problem & The Process to Solve it

UpGear Finance is a new breed of finance companies for providing leasing options for high quality computer hardware. As part of entering the market, they decided not to become a reseller themselves, but to integrate in a minimum way with existing resellers. The main goal here was to find an easy way integrate UpGear's payment offering into an existing reseller's website with minimum disruption and testing required for existing features. And we would be executing this using a Lean Methodology.

Approach

We used a Lean Approach so that we could work on multiple small ideas at a time. This approach really paid off well as UpGear needed quick turnaround and testing on multiple facets of the problem. These were How to introduce potential customers to the UpGear Leasing model, How to indicate to a customer that a particular product could be leased from an existing reseller, since not all products were part of UpGear's market strategy and How to integrate UpGear's solution with an existing reseller's website.

Pivot

Ultimately, what really helped was my developer background in eCommerce sites. I pitched the idea to separate the 2 sites as the benefits would be immense. Mainly it would be that the existing site would not require too much of testing and the danger that the experience would change any time new work needs to be done, but also that a new site would allow us to change the user experience for the better without affecting the existing site.

Ideation

The concepts we were able to ideate and test on were: - Introducing Leasing with UpGear as a payment method to a user at an existing reseller's site - Changes to product list and product pages to show that this product is leasable through UpGear - Changes to the Checkout experience to incorporate Leasing with UpGear - Web site copy for all of the above, to make a user receptive to the new payment method Pivoting and working on a complete new idea that would make it easier for business to integrate with existing resellers

Results
UpGear had already pivoted to integrate with existing resellers rather than be a reseller themselves. However, how was the real question, and they could onboard the changes with the UX we could help them with. The strength that came from making a separate site rather than change the existing site changed the whole equation and would allow UpGear to integrate with new resellers in the future as well as make it easy for UpGear to process their new customers.
